Training and certification
Certified Plant Manager™
No one is trained to become a plant manager. This is the complete standard for the job, certified on a proven result in your own plant.
Why it exists
No one is trained to become a plant manager.
Plant managers learn the job in pieces, across a career: a stint in another function, a Lean or Six Sigma push, whatever initiative came along. Since Covid, many are promoted fast with little preparation, and the seasoned leaders who used to mentor them are mostly gone.
- Learned by trial and error.
- Mentors who are no longer there.
- Hardest in the largest organizations.
The plant manager bench today
The seat
A plant manager is a mini CEO.
Procurement buys the materials. The plant decides what becomes of them, and of the labor, energy and overhead around them: more than 70% of the cost of goods. Yet most companies run plants as cost centers, because few plant managers are ready to run the business end to end. Excellent companies hold the plant manager to a P&L.
- Owns the results, not every lever.
- Leads through sales, procurement, finance and HR.
- Answers for profit and growth, not just spending.
Cost center, or a business?
| Cost center | Business with a P&L | |
|---|---|---|
| Measured on | Spending against budget | Profit, cash and growth |
| Materials | Bought elsewhere, used here | Yield, scrap and giveaway owned by the plant |
| The job | Keep it running the way it is | Run it as a business, and grow it with the strategy |
| Decisions | Made for the plant | Made by the plant, with the functions around it |
| Who it takes | A supervisor of operations | A certified plant manager |

| 4. Smart manufacturing, data and AI | Improvement and AI |
| 5. Flow, capacity and operations science | Flow and supply |
| 6. Customer and supply chain | Flow and supply |
| 7. Quality, risk and regulatory integrity | Quality and assets |

How certification works
See it, plan it, run it, build the bench, prove it.
Every step is work your plant needed anyway. Your mentor reviews each one before you move to the next. A clear failure on safety, quality, ethics or people leadership blocks certification, whatever the scores elsewhere.
- A plan the business funds, with targets agreed with finance.
- An operating system that holds without you in the room.
- A bench, and a named successor.
The path to certification
| Step | What you deliver | Signed off by |
|---|---|---|
| 1. See it | Plant assessment: where the plant really stands and why, its people included | Sponsor |
| 2. Plan it | Recovery or growth plan, with targets agreed with finance | Sponsor and finance |
| 3. Run it | The Infinity Loop operating system, held at standard for eight weeks | Infinity assessor |
| 4. Build the bench | Talent review and bench plan, with a named successor | HR and sponsor |
| 5. Prove it | The plan's targets delivered, validated against the plant P&L | Finance |
| And | A competency test, then a readout to your leadership | Infinity |

What is a Certified Plant Manager?
A plant manager who has proven, in their own plant, that they can run it as one system: safety, people, quality, delivery and cost every day, and the economics behind them.
Why certify plant managers?
Because a plant manager runs a business that decides most of the cost of goods, and most are promoted into the seat with little preparation or mentoring. Certification proves they can run the plant and improve it, on a result your finance team validates.
Is this plant manager training or a certification?
Both. It is a complete plant manager certification: training against one Body of Knowledge, a competency test, and five steps in your own plant, ending in results your finance team validates.
Who is the program for?
Sitting plant managers, and the leaders companies are preparing for the seat. A company can send a cohort, or a plant manager can enroll on their own.
How long does it take?
Four months of program, with one week of instruction a month and the work done in your plant between weeks. You are certified once your finance team validates the results against your plan.
Can I enroll on my own?
Yes. You will need a sponsor at your plant who signs off your plan, and a finance contact who validates the result.
Is there an exam?
Yes. A case test puts you in a plant manager's first week, with real numbers and decisions to make, followed by an oral. It tests judgment, not recall. You need to pass it as well as the five steps in your plant.
Does it fit my industry?
The standard applies to any manufacturing plant. The project and much of the teaching use your own plant's data, so it fits the way your plant runs.
Does the credential expire?
No. It is earned on a result, and it does not expire or need renewing.
How is it different from the Certified Infinity Loop Practitioner?
The Practitioner certifies one person to run the Infinity Loop in 90 days. The Certified Plant Manager covers the whole job of running a plant, built on the same Loop.
